Why I am making leather products`

I run a very successful entertainment business with my wife Kim (who is an amazing crochet artist as well).

People constantly ask if I’m making a new “side-hustle” or if I’m going to make leathergoods a business.

The answer is similar to Blue Bell Ice Cream here in Texas. Their slogan is “we eat all we can and sell the rest”.

I make leather projects for me. I enjoy it, but I Kim and I only have the need for so many bags – so the rest I sell here or on Etsy along with other handmade goods from me and Kim.  If I end up breaking even on what I spend on leather and tools for myself – then I’ll call that a win! I’m not making leather to make a profit, but I am pricing my products at what I feel is a reasonable fee for my time and materials.

The projects are all hand-made and finished – so they take some time. Most bags take several hours and my big “backpack” project took about 35-40 hours to make! I love the time I spend sewing, punching holes, cutting patterns and even, lately, designing some of my own patterns and it’ll make me infinitely happy to see you using one of these projects in your everyday life. It’s my goal to make a leather good that will last you a lifetime and that you’ll be able to pass down to the next generation.

I will certainly take a commission for a bespoke project where you can pick the pattern, size, color, stitching etc, but depending on the time of year, it may take a month or longer to get that project to you. Bespoke projects are also more costly than purchasing something that I have already made and have sitting in the office waiting for a new home.
